The 5-Step Blueprint for Navigating Change
Change is the single constant in our lives, yet most of us cringe at the thought of it. In Episode 15 of The Intentional Pause, I explore why change feels so uncomfortable, how our brains process uncertainty, and how to navigate change with clarity rather than fear.
Why Change Feels Heavy
Our brains crave predictability and familiarity. When unexpected change strikes: a career shift, a relationship end, or a health scare, it kicks off a spiral into “What-If Land”. We aren’t necessarily afraid of change itself; we are afraid of the unforeseeable aftermath and losing our sense of control, security, identity, or comfort. When you feel stuck, ask yourself: “What am I actually afraid of losing?”
Shift Your Focus to the “Control Zone”
Most people spend over 80% of their emotional energy worrying about things that are Out of Bounds (other people’s reactions, past decisions, or unknown outcomes).
To regain your footing, focus on your Control Zone:
- Control: Your responses, attitude, tone, and instant actions.
- Influence: How you show up in your relationships.
- Out of Bounds: Everything else.
A 5-Step Process to Navigate Change
When a shift occurs, work through this simple framework:
- Pause and Breathe: Stop before reacting to give yourself space to respond intentionally.
- Name the Emotion: Identify what you’re feeling (e.g., fear, anxiety, worry).
- Question the Story: Separate fact from the story or assumptions your fear is telling you.
- Identify Control: Ask what is directly within your control right now.
- Take One Small Action: Move forward with a single, manageable step.
Your Pause with Purpose Challenge
Identify a change you are facing or resisting right now. Take a sheet of paper and create two columns: What I Can Control and What I Cannot Control. Pick one item from your control list and act on it today.
“Until the pain of staying the same is greater than the fear of changing, you will stay the same.”
