The Coach Behind the Coach

The Coach Behind the Coach: Why Every Leader Needs Someone in Their Corner

As leaders, we’re often expected to have the answers. We solve problems, make decisions, guide teams, and help others grow. But who helps us?

That’s the question at the heart of my latest episode of The Intentional Pause, where I had the privilege of sitting down with someone who has had a profound impact on my own leadership journey—my coach, Joe White.

Our conversation reminded me of a simple but powerful truth: even the best leaders need someone who challenges them, encourages them, and helps them see what they cannot see on their own.

Coaching Isn’t About Having the Answers

Many people think coaching is about advice. While wisdom certainly has its place, great coaching is much more than telling someone what to do. The best coaches ask thoughtful questions that help us slow down, reflect, and uncover answers that align with our values and goals. They create space for clarity instead of confusion and curiosity instead of judgment. In a world that rewards speed and constant action, coaching invites us to pause—and that pause often becomes the catalyst for our greatest breakthroughs.

Leadership Can Be Lonely

One of the realities of leadership is that it can feel isolating. The higher we climb, the fewer people there may be who are willing to challenge our thinking honestly. We become surrounded by people who expect us to lead rather than people who encourage us to continue learning. That’s why having a trusted coach is so valuable.

A coach provides perspective when emotions cloud our judgment. They ask the difficult questions others may avoid. They celebrate our wins while also holding us accountable to become the leader we aspire to be. Growth rarely happens by accident. It happens intentionally.

The Power of Better Questions

One of the biggest takeaways from my conversation with Joe is that transformation often begins with a question.

Questions like:

  • What assumptions am I making?
  • What story am I telling myself?
  • What am I avoiding?
  • What’s getting in the way of becoming the leader I want to be?
  • If fear weren’t a factor, what would I do next?

These questions don’t always have immediate answers. But they create awareness, and awareness is the foundation of growth.

Why Intentional Pauses Matter

If you’ve listened to The Intentional Pause before, you know that I believe some of our greatest growth happens when we intentionally slow down. Pausing isn’t about stopping progress. It’s about creating enough space to think clearly before moving forward.

Whether you’re facing a difficult decision, navigating change, leading through uncertainty, or simply feeling stretched too thin, taking an intentional pause allows you to reconnect with your purpose and make decisions that align with your values instead of reacting to circumstances. Coaching creates those pauses. It encourages us to reflect before we react, to learn before we assume, and to grow before we settle.

A Challenge for You

As you reflect on this conversation, consider these questions:

  • Who challenges you to become better?
  • Who tells you the truth with compassion?
  • When was the last time you intentionally sought feedback?
  • Are you investing in your own growth with the same energy you invest in helping others grow?

Leadership is not about reaching a destination where learning stops. It’s about committing to continuous growth. The strongest leaders aren’t the ones who know everything—they’re the ones who never stop learning.

Your Intentional Pause

This week, I invite you to create space for reflection. Take ten minutes without distractions and ask yourself: “What is one area where I would grow faster if I invited someone else’s perspective?” You may discover that the next step in your leadership journey isn’t finding another answer. It’s finding the right person to ask you a better question.

If this has encouraged you, I’d love for you to subscribe to The Intentional Pause wherever you listen to podcasts, leave a review, and share it with someone who is committed to growing as a leader. Together, let’s continue creating moments to pause, reflect, and lead with greater intention.

Give yourself permission to pause!
