Is AI Taking the Human Out of Work? Why We Need Human Fluency
We live in a world that moves at lightning speed, and we are constantly distracted by notifications, emails, and what my longtime friend and fellow behavioral scientist Jay Niblick calls “Social Needia”. On this episode of The Intentional Pause, Jay and I sat down to tackle a topic I’ll admit I’ve been hesitant about: Artificial Intelligence.
As I-O psychologists, Jay and I are geeky about human behavior, psychometrics, and organizational dynamics. But as AI expands exponentially, doubling in capability every few months, an important gap has emerged. The teams growing AI are brilliant computer scientists and mathematicians, but very few have backgrounds in psychology, sociology, or human behavior.
AI isn’t just a tool anymore; it’s entering the workforce right next to us. Yet, as Jay brilliantly pointed out, this synthetic generation of AI was “born in a lab, homeschooled in a lab, and has never had a friend.”
Here are the key takeaways from our conversation on how you can manage AI without losing your humanity:
- From Emotional Intelligence to “Human Fluency”: We can’t teach AI true emotional intelligence because it doesn’t experience human emotions. Instead, we need AI to develop human fluency, a deep, scientifically backed understanding of human personality, subconscious drivers, and communication preferences.
- The Critical Thinking Crisis: My biggest concern with AI is cognitive offloading. Too many people are using AI in place of their own brains, writing emails, making decisions, and even navigating personal relationships. When we stop slowing down to analyze, our critical thinking muscles weaken.
- AI is Grown, Not Programmed: Misconceptions about AI fall on both extremes. Some dismiss it because it makes mistakes (or “hallucinates”), while others assume it can just be reprogrammed. In reality, AI systems are growing, meaning we must actively demand that developers value and prioritize human-centric frameworks.
- A Shift in Leadership: We are already seeing AI step into management roles, including making autonomous hiring and firing decisions based on data. This shift completely reshapes the field of leadership development and workforce dynamics.
Your Pause with Purpose Challenge
Before you reach for AI this week, take a 60-second intentional pause. Ask yourself: What do I already think about this? What does my intuition say? Use AI to enhance your thinking, not replace it. We are magical, complex beings; don’t lose your human edge.
